Through Hampton Park Primary School’s WIN (What I Need) Club, we provide a school-wide Literacy intervention program that is aimed at improving the foundational reading and spelling skills of children who need additional support. We ensure that the support provided follows the best available evidence base regarding how children learn to read and spell. We use a program that uses effective techniques for teaching phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension that complements in-class learning.
We follow the framework of the Response to Intervention Model, meaning that most children requiring some additional support are provided assistance in small groups, and children with more complex needs are provided with one-on-one sessions. We identify children for the WIN Club based on their assessment results from class, and track growth of identified children closely to evaluate the effectiveness of our interventions.
Our aim in WIN Club is to accelerate student achievement in literacy to the point where identified students maximise their literacy learning so that they can access the curriculum with their peers. The WIN Club program supports our school’s firm belief that all children must be literate individuals by the time they leave primary school.
