At Hampton Park Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality Literacy instruction that is supported by research and proven to be effective. We strive to align all English lessons with the body of research known as the ‘Science of Reading.’
Reading
Quality Reading instruction is underpinned by the following six areas:
At Hampton Park Primary School, we address these through the following approaches:
Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum
F-1 students participate in daily phonemic awareness drills to build their ability to identify and manipulate the individual sounds in words.
Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP)
SSP has been proven to be the most effective method for teaching students to read and spell. F-2 students participate in the SSP program ‘Little Learners Love Literacy’ each day, building fluency in their ability to read words accurately.
Text Study
F-6 students study preselected mentor texts, that are linked to either a literature unit or our knowledge curriculum, and pull them apart to understand, analyse and evaluate them. Students participate in explicit vocabulary and comprehension lessons, reading, rereading and discussing texts as guided by the Victorian Curriculum and the ‘Questioning the Author’ approach.
Writing
At Hampton Park Primary School, we understand that writing is a complex process, and aim to scaffold and guide students to succeed by providing explicit instruction in the following areas:
We believe that Reading and Writing should be highly integrated, along with our Humanities (History, Geography, Health & Science) subjects and aim to ensure that lessons in these areas are highly linked.
