Students from Prep to Year 6 in Hampton Park Primary School participate in one weekly Mandarin session with a qualified Mandarin teacher on site.

The 50 minute sessions at Hampton Park Primary School, in line with Victorian Curriculum, provides opportunities for students to:  

  • Participate in Chinese calligraphy writing sessions using ink and Chinese calligraphy brush and paper.
  • Establish linguistic awareness from the perspective of a symbol-based language.
  • Participate in a range of Chinese incursions or excursions such as the Lion Dance incursion or the excursion to the Chinese Museum.
  • Participate in Chinese lanterns, Chinese paper fans, Chinese masks and knots making sessions.
  • Learn about basic Chinese symbols through a range of hands-on activities, including constructing symbols with sand tracing or play dough, prior to handwriting sessions. 
  • Develop pronunciation skills with the knowledge of Pinyin (Romanised pronunciation system in Mandarin). 
  • Engage in well-structured units of work that have a strong focus on conversational language.  
  • Participate in a variety of Chinese cultural activities, including music, dancing, art, cooking and celebrations. 
  • Explore impacts of migrants on Australian history in the past and modern times through guided research projects.
