At Hampton Primary School, the delivery of the Victorian Curriculum is enhanced by an intensive literacy program for students from Prep to Grade 4. The program is designed to provide students with practical and meaningful learning opportunities that build on skills learned every day in their normal classes.

Prep students are explicitly taught phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary knowledge, fluency and comprehension through a program called Little Learners Love Literacy.
Grade 1 and 2 students participate in the Literacy Room Program. For 4 x 50 minute sessions per week, in addition to regular reading lessons. Students build on their knowledge attained in Prep and continue to be explicitly taught the alphabetic code and phonemic awareness skills required to break words up into sounds and blend the sounds together to read words.
Grade 3 and 4 students participate in the Reading Room Program. For 4 x 50 minute sessions per week, in addition to regular reading lessons. Students build on their knowledge attained in the Literacy Room Program and begin to build comprehension strategies to make meaning of the texts being read.
Grade 5 and 6 students participate in a school developed reading program that allows students to apply skills learnt in the junior and middle years. Students have the opportiunity to read and respond to, a variety of text and media types.
