The Arts - Visual Arts

At Hampton Park Primary School, the children are immersed in one hour per week of structured Visual Arts lessons. We believe that creativity is the ability to think outside the square, which is paramount to achieving success in all walks of life.

Focus areas are:

1. Creating & Making (Prep to Grade Six) which involves:

	Exploring and using a variety of arts elements such as line, shape, colour, texture, space, tone, form etc.
	Using a variety of media such as clay, wood, paper, dye, fabric, glass, wire etc.
	Communicating their ideas, feelings, experiences and passions.

2. Exploring & Responding (Grade Three to Six) which involves:

Discussing and describing elements and features in their own and others art works, using appropriate language.

Through all of these experiences, the children develop skills & techniques, problem solving, creative thinking, aesthetic awareness, personal learning and best of all……confidence, risk taking and pride in themselves.

English

Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning and is a priority at Hampton Park PS. Each day, classes devote two hours of the timetable specifically to developing the literacy skills of their students.

Focus areas are:

	Speaking and Listening
	Reading
	Writing

Teachers plan for individual learning and teach skills that are required by each student.  We are proud of the improvement of our students that is often at a faster rate than that expected.

Additional assistance is provided with these programs, conducted by specially trained teachers and support staff:

	Reading Recovery
	English as a Second Language
	Early Years’ and Middle Years’ Literacy Support
	Speech Pathology Assistance

Literacy Support - Reading Recovery

The Reading Recovery Program is a daily 30 minute, intensive teaching session for individual children in Year 1 to accelerate their reading and writing.

Children who meet the selection criteria develop confidence while on the program and this is reflected back in the classroom.

Literacy Support - Closing the Gap

In continuing to provide a quality education, Hampton Park Primary School has a range of experts to assist developing children. These include experienced expert staff in the areas of Literacy Intervention, English as a Second Language (ESL), Reading Recovery, On-site Speech Pathologist, 7 Classroom Assistants trained to deliver the Speech Pathologists Program as well as Literacy Intervention.

We believe the establishment of a Literacy and Numeracy starting point for all children is important. By providing this testing for your child it commences the important teacher and parent bond necessary to foster continual success.

Each year all Preps and New Students to our school are tested by the Speech Pathologist to ascertain their Language abilities and provide another important starting point for their child’s thorough education at Hampton Park Primary School.

The Humanities

Focus areas are:

	History
	Geography
	Economic

The Humanities provide unique ways to understand how and why groups of people have settle where the have, organised their societies, developed means of generating and distributing wealth, developed codes, laws and belief systems and related to other groups of people.

Languages Other than English (LOTE)

Mathematics

Numeracy continues to be a school priority. The Early Years Numeracy program is being implemented at Hampton Park Primary School. The school also has two teachers trained in Middle Years Numeracy and is implementing this program in Grades 5 and 6.

The five keys areas of numeracy development are:

	Number – focuses’ on developing students’ understanding of counting, value of number and order.
	Space - focuses on developing students’ understanding of shape and location.
	Measurement, Chance and Data - focuses on developing students’ understanding of money, length, mass, area, volume and capacity, angles, time and temperature, and probability.
	Structure - focuses on the students’ understanding of set, logic, function and algebra.
	Working Mathematically - focuses on developing students’ sense of problem posing, problem solving, modelling and investigation.

Science

Science is organised into two dimensions:

	Number – focuses’ on developing students’ understanding of counting, value of number and order.
	Space - focuses on developing students’ understanding of shape and location.

These understandings build on students’ curiosity about themselves and their interactions with the world and how science relates to society and the environment.
